Westbrook Police release photo of water main break that isn’t Westbrook

Commuters were taking a detour on Methodist Road on Monday morning after a water main broke.

The Westbrook Police Department posted on their Facebook page just before 7 a.m. when they responded to the water main break near 1020 Methodist Road saying the break is expected to take a long time to repair and that drivers should avoid the area.

A photo was shared with the post, albeit at low resolution, which shows just how bad the breakup was. The pressure of the water breaking through the lines shot up into the air like a geyser.

However, this photo shared by the Westbrook Police Department is not actually a photo of the water main burst, which has several people worried about the seriousness of the situation. The photo is actually of a water main break in Charlotte, North Carolina in October 2021.

The actual water main break was not as dramatic as this photo of the break later shared by the Westbrook Police Department shows.

The photo is also accompanied by an apology:

“We profusely apologize for using a ‘Google Image’ image in our post (which we in no way claimed to be from Methodist Road) about an otherwise ‘annoying’ event intended to inform residents of area and traffic so that they can be inconvenienced as little as possible and find an alternate route to travel. We will try to do better…”

Guess we now know why the shared image was in such low resolution. Lesson learned Westbrook Police Department.
