Man’s viral video on “How to spot a good wand” splits internet

The viral video of a Frenchman on “how to spot a good baguette” has divided the Internet.

The video was posted on TikTok Monday by Encore French Lessons, which wrote: “Connais ta #baguette.” The post has accumulated over 795,000 views and over 140,000 likes.

“A good wand should have brown and golden colors,†the man said at the start of the video. To illustrate, he points to a “good” baguette, which sits on the counter next to what he calls an “industrial” baguette.

According to Spoon University, there are three types of baguettes: “the regular baguette, the molded baguette and the floured baguette”.

“A regular baguette is the typical golden-brown French bread that you come across most often,†the post said. “The molded baguette, which translates to ‘molded bread,’ is made by industrial ovens.

“Finally, a floured baguette has its crust covered with flour before baking,†concluded Spoon University.

Since the man in the Encore French Lesson video refers to the little baguette as an “industrial” baguette, it’s safe to assume he’s referring to a molded baguette.

“In a good baguette, the interior is rather cream colored,†continued the TikToker. “Whereas in the industrial sector, it’s just white.”

He goes on to say that the interior of good chopsticks is “springy” and “soft”, while the interior of industrial chopsticks “often flakes off easily.”

Then he said that a person can determine the quality of a wand based on how it smells.

“A good baguette should smell like butter,†he said. He smiled as he smelled the right wand. When he smells the industrial wand, however, he says it smells “nothing.”

Then he said that “one of the most obvious ways to spot a good wand is to look for a flat back versus a dotted back.”

And finally, he concludes his video by performing a sound test.

“A good wand should sing,†the video’s text overlay read.

Commentators were quite divided over TikToker’s opinions. While some agreed with what he had to say, others shared that they preferred industrial chopsticks.

“Anything you report as negative towards the industry makes me want to do it even more,†Dan wrote.

“I am French and prefer the industrialist, so to each his own,” said Araseny.

“For some reason, I feel like the right wand is going to break my teeth,†Stéphany said.

Elisa Sylva replied: “This is how you know it’s the right wand.”

When one commentator said they “don’t like the elastic, chewy bread,” Aaron Beddome replied, “Just take miracle bread and call it a day.”

Raqyyy said, “I love the crispy crust and chew on the inside. A good baguette is just a * kiss from the chef. *”

“The ‘crunch’ is music to my ears,” soco commented.
